Bearden Elementary

It seems as if everyone has turned their backs on Bearden Elementary, a school that sits in the middle of a cotton field in one of the most rural parts of the country. For years, Bearden has struggled as one of the lowest rated schools in Mississippi. The history of segregation, poorly paid teachers, and generations of illiteracy all contribute to the problems here.

As the state of Mississippi tries to spark a reading revolution, Bearden is yearning for change. And with a committed staff — including new teacher Jill Todd — a focused reading program, and a grant to implement it, this year looks promising. But will that be enough?
