WED., MARCH 18 — Syria’s Detainee Files, the 2025 FRONTLINE documentary exposing the scale and tactics of the Assad regime’s brutal system of detention, torture and killing of prisoners, has received a 2026 Overseas Press Club of America (OPC) Award.

The OPC announced today that the feature-length documentary was honored with the David A. Andelman and Pamela Title Award for best international TV, video, radio, audio or podcast reporting. The award recognizes reporting that demonstrates a concern for the human condition.

From a team that includes award-winning journalists and filmmakers Sara Obeidat, Sasha Joelle Achilli, Amel Guettatfi and Saad Al Nassife, Syria’s Detainee Files investigates what happened to some of the hundreds of thousands of people detained by Assad’s regime during the Syrian war.

Syria’s Detainee Files, a co-production with BBC, sheds new light on atrocities carried out during Bashar al-Assad’s reign, drawing on stunning firsthand testimony from former regime insiders and officers who carried them out, alongside the accounts of people who survived them.

According to the OPC Awards’ official announcement, the judges remarked that, “In a highly competitive field, Syria’s Detainee Files stood out for its scope and deep reporting on the torture of thousands of Syrians who disappeared into the Assad regime’s prisons.”

“We are honored that Syria’s Detainee Files has been recognized by the Overseas Press Club of America,” said Raney Aronson-Rath, editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE, the PBS documentary series produced at GBH in Boston. “This award underscores the vital role of international accountability journalism and our commitment to delivering deeply reported investigations to audiences worldwide.”

Aronson-Rath added, “This recognition belongs to the courageous and intrepid reporting team — Sara Obeidat, Sasha Joelle Achilli, Amel Guettatfi and Saad Al Nassife — and to our partners at the BBC, whose collaboration made this investigation possible.”

Aronson-Rath will also be honored with the OPC’s 2026 President’s Award, recognizing her lifetime achievements in journalism.

Founded in 1939, the Overseas Press Club of America is the nation’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to international journalism. Including these wins, FRONTLINE has won 21 OPCs to date. Watch the award-winning documentary below now:
