The feature film will world premiere in Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Competition in January 2026
DEC. 12, 2025 — ONE IN A MILLION, a new feature documentary from FRONTLINE, the award-winning PBS documentary series produced at GBH in Boston, and BBC Storyville, will make its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival this January in Park City, Utah.
From directors Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes, and producers Will Anderson, James Bluemel, Andrew Palmer of KEO Films and Academy Award®-winning producer Raney Aronson-Rath of FRONTLINE, ONE IN A MILLION will be featured in the world-renowned festival’s World Cinema Documentary Competition.
ONE IN A MILLION shares the story of 11-year-old Israa as she and her family leave Syria in search of safety and a better life in Europe.
Filmed over a decade, Azzam and MacInnes capture Israa as she embarks on an epic journey — from fleeing the war as a young Syrian refugee, to navigating adolescence and a new culture in Germany, to returning to her home of Aleppo as an adult.
ONE IN A MILLION is an intimate, coming-of-age story that asks a universal question: What does it mean to call a place home? The film illuminates the complexities of the refugee experience, capturing Israa and her family as they confront war, exile, and heartbreak — and discover resilience, freedom, and love — in a foreign land.
“After ten years of filming, we’re honoured that ‘One In A Million’ will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. This has been a deeply personal film for us to make. Over the years of following Israa and her family, our bond has grown profoundly. In our own way, we too have been going through the pain of exile from Syria over the past decade, and the film is an expression of that shared experience,” say Azzam and MacInnes. “We hope ‘One In A Million’ helps audiences better understand and empathize with the complexities of the refugee experience, and we look forward to sharing it with viewers soon.”
“We’re grateful to premiere FRONTLINE FEATURES’ latest documentary ‘One in a Million’ at the Sundance Film Festival next month,” says FRONTLINE editor-in-chief and executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath. “Itab and Jack’s decade-long commitment to following this story offers viewers a rare perspective on what it’s like to grow up as a refugee, and we look forward to sharing this film to audiences soon. We celebrate this exciting news with Itab, Jack and the whole film team, as well as with our partners at BBC Storyville and KEO Films.”
