The Radio Television Digital News Association announced today that FRONTLINE, the PBS documentary series produced at GBH in Boston, has been honored with two 2024 Edward R. Murrow Awards.

20 Days in Mariupol, FRONTLINE and The Associated Press’ Academy Award®-winning documentary, won an Edward R. Murrow Award in the “Feature Documentary” category.

A visceral, first-person view of the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 20 Days in Mariupol is told through the perspective of Ukrainian filmmaker and AP video journalist Mstyslav Chernov. The 2023 film follows Chernov and his AP colleagues Evgeniy Maloletka and Vasilisa Stepanenko as they become the last international journalists reporting from Mariupol as Russian forces close in. The journalists, who would go on to win a 2023 Pulitzer Prize, document some of the most indelible images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more. 20 Days in Mariupol is directed, written and produced by Chernov, and produced and edited by FRONTLINE’s Michelle Mizner alongside producers Raney Aronson-Rath, FRONTLINE’s editor-in-chief and executive producer, and Derl McCrudden, AP’s vice president of news. Earlier this year, 20 Days in Maripol also earned a duPont-Columbia Award, a  Peabody Award and an Overseas Press Club Award.

Inside the Uvalde Response, FRONTLINE, ProPublica and The Texas Tribune’s documentary, was recognized by the Murrows in the “News Documentary” category.

Drawing on a trove of unreleased investigative files to produce a stunning and exhaustive investigation, the December 2023 documentary Inside the Uvalde Response featured never-before-published interviews conducted by state and federal investigators in the days immediately after the 2022 Robb Elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, shooting. FRONTLINE, ProPublica and The Texas Tribune’s investigation identified critical missteps in the response to the shooting, underlined the complexity, chaos and tragedy of the day and the lessons learned.

Juanita Ceballos, one of FRONTLINE’s Investigative Journalist Equity Initiative filmmakers, wrote and directed Inside the Uvalde Response alongside FRONTLINE producer and editor, Michelle Mizner and co-producer and senior editor Lauren Prestileo. The series involved the work of Lomi Kriel, Lexi Churchill, Perla Trevizo and Jessica Priest for ProPublica and the Tribune; Jinitzail Hernández and Zach Despart for the Tribune

20 Days in Mariupol, Inside the Uvalde Response and other 2024 Edward R. Murrow Award winners will be celebrated at the awards gala on Oct. 14 at Gotham Hall in New York City. Watch FRONTLINE’s award-winning documentaries below:
