The Scripps Howard Foundation announced Thursday that FRONTLINE, the PBS series produced at GBH in Boston, has been nominated for two 2024 Scripps Howard Journalism Awards.

Both 20 Days in Mariupol, FRONTLINE’s film in partnership with The Associated Press, and Clarence and Ginni Thomas: Politics, Power and the Supreme Court were nominated in the Scripps Howard’s Excellence in National/International Video Storytelling category, honoring Jack R. Howard.

20 Days in Mariupol is told through the perspective of Ukrainian filmmaker and AP video journalist Mstyslav Chernov. The Academy Award®-winning 2023 documentary follows Chernov and his AP colleagues Evgeniy Maloletka and Vasilisa Stepanenko as they become the last international journalists reporting from Mariupol as Russian forces close in. Together, they capture what later become defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more.

In addition to an Academy Award®, 20 Days in Mariupol was honored earlier this year with two BAFTA Awards, an Overseas Press Club Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award.

Clarence and Ginni Thomas: Politics, Power and the Supreme Court tells the inside story of the influential couple’s path to power. This 2023 investigation from veteran filmmaker Michael Kirk and his team traces how race, power and controversy collided in the rise of the Supreme Court justice and his wife and how the couple has reshaped American law and politics.

Earlier this year, Clarence and Ginni Thomas: Politics, Power & the Supreme Court won a Peabody Award and was nominated for a Documentary Emmy.

According to its website, The Scripps Howard Awards honor storytelling that “focus on high-impact reporting,” and “journalism that spurs action.”

“The journalism produced by this year’s finalists exposed wrongdoing, held the powerful accountable, shaped policies and helped correct historical records,” Meredith Delaney, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Fund, said in the organization’s official press release. “The 71st Scripps Howard Journalism Awards will shine a light on the responsibility these journalists have to tell their community’s stories – and serve as democracy’s watchdog.”
