The Scripps Howard Foundation announced Sunday that FRONTLINE, the PBS series produced at GBH in Boston, won a 2024 Scripps Howard Journalism Award for its documentary 20 Days in Mariupol.
The 2023 feature documentary, produced in partnership with The Associated Press, was honored in Scripps Howard’s Excellence in National/International Video Storytelling category, honoring Jack R. Howard.
20 Days in Mariupol is told through the perspective of Ukrainian filmmaker and AP video journalist Mstyslav Chernov. The Academy Award®-winning 2023 documentary follows Chernov and his AP colleagues Evgeniy Maloletka and Vasilisa Stepanenko as they become the last international journalists reporting from Mariupol as Russian forces close in. Together, they capture what later become defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more.
In addition to an Academy Award®, 20 Days in Mariupol was honored earlier this year with two BAFTA Awards, an Overseas Press Club Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award.
According to its website, the Scripps Howard Awards honor storytelling that focuses on “high-impact reporting,” and “journalism that spurs action.”
“The journalism produced by this year’s finalists exposed wrongdoing, held the powerful accountable, shaped policies and helped correct historical records,” Meredith Delaney, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Fund, said in the organization’s official press release. “The 71st Scripps Howard Journalism Awards will shine a light on the responsibility these journalists have to tell their community’s stories — and serve as democracy’s watchdog.”
