The Scripps Howard Foundation announced Tuesday that FRONTLINE, the PBS series produced at GBH in Boston, won two 2025 Scripps Howard Journalism Awards

The series’ October 2024 documentary A Year of War: Israelis and Palestinians won for Excellence in National/International Video Storytelling, honoring Roy W. Howard. From director Robin Barnwell and producers Barnwell and Toby Fitzgerald, A Year of War documents harrowing accounts from those who experienced the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack and the ongoing war in Gaza.

FRONTLINE’s December 2024 documentary Maui’s Deadly Firestorm also won for Excellence in Local Video Storytelling, honoring Jack R. Howard. From director Xinyan Yu and producers Yu and Christina Avalos, the documentary investigates the deadliest American wildfire in a century, and the missed warnings that made it so unstoppable — examining the fire’s causes, the chaotic response, and how changes to the climate and landscape have made Maui increasingly vulnerable to fires.

“We are so pleased to see both our local and international reporting recognized by the Scripps Howard Awards,” says FRONTLINE editor-in-chief and executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath. “We share these wins with our intrepid filmmakers, along with GBH, PBS and CPB who champion our investigative and accountability storytelling.”

Meredith Delaney, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Fund, said this year’s winners “exemplify the power of journalism to inform, engage and inspire change,” and “their impactful storytelling highlights the need for accountability and the consequences of systemic failures on vulnerable communities.”
