FRONTLINE, Columbia Global Reports and the Committee to Protect Journalists present a virtual event on the importance of press freedom featuring Maria Ressa, a renowned Philippine journalist who now faces jail time for her work. Ressa became a top target of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who dismisses critical reporting as “fake news.” As the United States and countries around the world grapple with the effects and aftershocks of disinformation campaigns, join this timely discussion on the consequences of manipulating the truth within democracies, the role of social media, and the power of press freedom.
FEATURED SPEAKERS: Maria Ressa: CEO & Executive Editor, Rappler Ramona Diaz: Film Director, “A Thousand Cuts” Joel Simon: Executive Director, the Committee to Protect Journalists Raney Aronson-Rath: Executive Producer, FRONTLINE Moderated by Nicholas Lemann: Executive Director, Columbia Global Reports and Dean Emeritus, Columbia University School of Journalism
The event will feature clips from “A Thousand Cuts” — a film that goes inside the escalating war between the Philippine government and the press, and follows Ressa and her reporters’ efforts to hold the government to account.
