Investigative Journalist Equity Initiative

FRONTLINE’s Investigative Journalist Equity Initiative supports mid-career journalists/reporters from underrepresented communities who are interested in investigative long-form documentary storytelling. The participants will receive support for the full trajectory of these projects from the award-winning FRONTLINE team – from the earliest stages of research and development to production to distribution and promotion. Individuals will work with FRONTLINE on a project for one year from the research and development of a film through production and delivery.

FRONTLINE’s senior editorial will provide ample one-on-one support to the journalists bridging their journalistic expertise into longform investigative documentary storytelling. They will attend seminars focusing on business, distribution and promotion. Support will be tailored to their needs based on experience levels. The journalists will also be embedded within a production company to expose them to the business side of documentary filmmaking, with the goal of increasing the number of production companies led by individuals from underrepresented groups.

The initiative is a partnership with the National Multicultural Alliance (NMCA), an alliance of five nonprofit organizations that are dedicated to bringing unique voices and perspectives from diverse communities to all aspects of public broadcasting. These organizations are Latino Public Broadcasting, Black Public Media, Vision Maker Media, Pacific Islanders in Communication, and the Center for Asian American Media.

The ultimate goal of FRONTLINE’s Investigative Journalist Equity Initiative is to build a model for how journalists from underrepresented backgrounds can grow their careers, expand their potential within the world of public media, and become exceptional longform investigative documentary filmmakers.

Ideal candidates should have a decade or more of news experience, with a focus on investigative journalism and long-form storytelling in any medium. All candidates should be passionate about documentary storytelling and must share FRONTLINE’s unwavering commitment to the pursuit of truth, accuracy, and fairness.

The Investigative Journalist Equity Initiative is supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Abrams Foundation, PBS and GBH. It is based in FRONTLINE’s newsroom at GBH in Boston, but journalists would be employed by independent production companies.
