Carla Borrás

Senior Producer of Special Projects and Innovation

As FRONTLINE’s senior producer of special projects and innovation, Carla Borrás oversees the development and production of special projects, helping the series expand the footprint of its journalism through emerging platforms and new forms of storytelling, from virtual and augmented-reality experiences to immersive interactive web-based documentaries to impactful visual social journalism.

A passionate storyteller, documentary fanatic and believer in the power of investigative journalism, Carla seeks to bring FRONTLINE’s signature in-depth journalism to audiences through forms that push the boundaries of what documentary journalism can be and by meeting viewers where they consume. She was instrumental in establishing a digital video unit inside the legacy series and leading its pioneering work in virtual reality and interactive documentary storytelling.

Under Carla’s leadership, FRONTLINE’s innovative special projects have earned numerous honors, including an Emmy for New Approaches: Documentary for the immersive web interactive The Last Generation, multiple Online Journalism Awards, two Scripps Howard Awards—most recently for the multiplatform initiative Un(re)solved in the category of Excellence in Multimedia Journalism, an Edward R. Murrow, SXSW’s Virtual Cinema Grand Jury prize and their innovation award for best Visual Media Experience, a Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association, as well as Webby awards for social news content. Additionally, The Last Generation, senior produced by Carla, was one of the works cited in FRONTLINE’s duPont-Columbia Gold Baton win.

In 2019, the Online News Association selected Carla for its Women’s Leadership Accelerator, and in 2020 she participated in the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Editorial Integrity & Leadership program, run by Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication.

Prior to jumping at the chance to join FRONTLINE, Carla worked on features and nonfiction programming for the Discovery Channel, Sony Pictures, truTV and spent countless hours working from coffee shops. She graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in psychology.
