Back to 400 Years of Subs Nordenfeldt sold his 1887 Nordenfeldt III—123 feet long, rated to a depth of 100 feet, and boasting an advertised surface speed of 14 knots—to Russia, but it ran aground en route. The Russians refused to accept delivery, and the boat was scrapped.
