Back to 400 Years of Subs Simon Lake's scheme included a set of wheels by which the boat could run along the bottom. Lake tested this theory in 1894 with a small wooden "test vehicle" financed by relatives and dubbed Argonaut Jr. Public demonstrations subsequently brought in enough money to build a larger boat, Argonaut I (see 1898).
