Orchids probably share an ancestor with the lily family, or
Liliaceae, and that heritage is noticeable in
Laelia purpurata, with its lily-like shape. This orchid is
native to Brazil, where it is the beloved national flower.
Collectors in southern Brazil hold highly competitive orchid shows
annually that feature no other orchid species besides
L. purpurata in myriad colors. They strive to find the most
unusual forms of this species, and they guard their secrets
zealously.
