This orchid is a member of one of the largest orchid genera,
Dendrobium, which includes more than 1,000 species, ranging
from India and Sri Lanka east to Japan and south through the
Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and New Guinea to Australia and
the Pacific Islands. Dendrobium stratiotes, which hails from
the Moluccan islands of eastern Indonesia, is a favorite among
orchid enthusiasts for its delicate structure, brightly veined lip,
and antler-like sepals (the modified leaves in the outer whorl of a
flower).
