MD -- The Making of a Doctor, Part II

Viewing Ideas

Before Watching

  1. Introduce the program by asking students to try to think of some of the reasons a person might choose to become a doctor. What are some of the obstacles that might prevent someone from choosing to become a doctor? As they watch, have the students keep notes of some of the reasons given by people in the program for choosing to become doctors.

  2. One of the challenges faced by the doctors in this program is managing stress. Before viewing the program, ask the students to recall a day or an incident when they were under a lot of pressure to succeed at something. How did the pressure affect the other parts of their life? How did they con-centrate on conversations with family or friends? What did they do to manage the stress? While they watch the program, have students look for examples of times when these doctors face difficulties at work or at home, and for the ways in which they deal with these challenges.

After Watching

  1. After watching, if possible, invite a health care professional (doctor, nurse, physician's assistant, emergency medical technician) to your classroom to discuss her or his career. Before the visit, prepare a list of questions with the class. Ask the guest to describe the preparation required for the job, the challenges of the job, and the positive aspects of the job.
