
Japan-based Sony is known as the world's top electronics manufacturer, but it has a sizable presence in the American entertainment industry as well. Sony Corporation of America has holdings in television, music, and film production and distribution. Sony Music Entertainment Inc. oversees Sony's collection of well-known labels as well as music publishing, distribution, and subscription services. In 2002, total sales were, $4.8 billion, down from $6 billion in 1999. Plans to merge with Bertelsmann's BMG are pending a European Commission ruling set to be handed down by July 22, 2004.
