Pennsylvania Station Redevelopment (1987-undetermined)
Child's design for as yet unbuilt Penn Station has done much to revive the spirit of the beloved original, built by architects McKim, White & Mead in 1910 and demolished in 1963. The new station will be set inside the James A. Farley Post Office, a concrete-pillared building that was also designed by McKim, White & Mead. The post office will continue to operate in the western half of the building, while the eastern half will contain the new train depot in a large open courtyard covered by a clear glass skylight, similar to the original station. Joining the two wings together will be the main ticketing office housed beneath the building's most dramatic feature: a soaring canopy of nickel-coated trusses reaching 150-feet into the air like a large, glass wave.
