Changi International Airport, Terminal 3 (2001-2008, projected)
Responding to Singapore's emergence as a major world transportation hub, the SOM team, lead by David Childs, has been commissioned to redesign the international terminal for the Changi Airport and create a rail terminal to connect the airport to a newly extended subway line. The centerpiece of the airport project will be a ticketing and departure hall that gives visitors a unique sensory experience. The hall's flat 22-acre roof will be outfitted with a system of 1,100 skylights fixed between 215,000 aluminum louvers (or hinged panels). The louvers will be adjusted to allow a subtle collage of natural light to shine inside the hall, producing an effect similar to that of a forest canopy.
