Blog Watch Mehdi Karoubi's daily newspaper, Etemad-e Melli, was shut down yesterday. Pedestrian says it was because it printed Karoubi's statements in full. There had been calls to gather in support of the newspaper on Monday, but Karoubi announced that the gathering was canceled. Despite this, in and around Karim Khan in Tehran, where the newspaper's head office is located, there was a strong security presence.
According to Bahman Agha,
It wasn't even six o'clock yet, but you could see one security officer for every step you took. On Kheradmand Street, another kind of security, which seemed to belong to the Revolutionary Guards, or maybe the judiciary, was present. They all had green masks, but physically, they looked very strong and very well built, like they had been handpicked.
Like in other days when there's supposed to be a demonstration, people were hanging around the streets. There was a big crowd and the atmosphere was one of rage. Because there is lots of security around Karim Khan, people start walking towards Valiasr. On Hafez Street, loud cries of Allah o Akbar were heard. This group mostly consists of young people who are so brave that they're not even wearing masks.
This also, from an unverified source:
People have gathered in Haft-e Tir square and Karim Khan Street to protest the closure of Mehdi Karroubi's 'Etemad-e Melli' daily. As of 6:30 in the afternoon security forces on bikes have come to the scene, beating protestors with batons.

This regime will try everything possible to silence the oppositions especially Mr. Karroubi who had detonated a bomb. Shutting down the press, cracking down people who opposed the regime, imprisoning those who silently protested, raiding homes and offices, murdering dissidents, kidnapping of opposition leaders, is Iran under martial law? Clearly this nation is. Iran has become a country of thugs indeed!
shetty / August 17, 2009 10:15 PMFor years Iranians have suffered enough from past and current administrations. Your nation and people are beset with enormous problems, you are being threatened by ambitious people. There are so many frustrated Iranians, bitter because they are not in power or their high expectations have failed from being fulfilled. Many chose the democratic process but were met by batons and bullets bringing more rage among people. As days pass it is evident that the very foundations of this regime is weakening and losing its grip on its own people. My brothers and sisters you have a tough task ahead.. rise up and fight a good fight!
What Iranian people need is a strong spark and a kick that would open up the flood gates of freedom and wash away the vile, venal, corrupt and backward, Mad Mullahas like Khamenei and his ilk.
