briefs After reading the AFP translation of Ayatollah Khamenei's speech and comparing it to the Persian, I thought I should clarify a couple of things. First, the AFP only translates the first line, but I think the entire paragraph needed to be translated. Second, his meeting with students was broadcast on TV and was not read by a newsreader as AFP claims.

AFP:

"I do not accuse the leaders of the recent incidents to be subordinate to the foreigners, like the United States and Britain, since this issue has not been proven for me," Khamenei said in a statement read out by a newsreader.

My Persian Translation:

"I do not accuse the champions of the recent incidents to be subordinate to the foreigners, like the United States and Britain, since this issue has not been proven for me, but there is no doubt that whether its responsible parties and champions know or don't know, this event was was a calculated move. Of course, those who planned this incident were not certain that their plan would be carried out, but the way some individuals provoked the situation made them hopeful. Thus the real instigators were able to use their media and electronic resources and thus to increase tensions."

Referring to the aftermath of the election he said: "the original events were not very far from anything we were expecting, but the people who entered the events [perhaps Mousavi, Karoubi, Khatami, etc] were very far from anything we were expecting."

He also admitted that there had been crimes committed after the election, but that the main event was the election itself, whereas "some" make it out to be as if the aftermath of the election was the most crucial and this view is "tyrannical":

"While these issues [crimes] should be investigated and followed, they should not be allowed to ruin or overshadow the main event itself [the election]. Some overlook the great tyranny that befell the people and the ruling system after the election, and the disrespect that was shown towards the system in the face of other nations, and make it out to be as if Kahrizak or the events of the university dormitories are the main events. This itself is a tyrannical view."

You may recall that in a previous speech he said that there were those "who are bent on acting against this government for the next four years."

So in other words - the iranians can demand change, but if the grand leader disproves, no change can happen.

The opposition accepts it.

So much about change...

people rebelling against the government is what a democracy is all about. Voting is for overthrowing gov'ts. and why can they believe that millions of people are accually upset about the results because they new Mousavi should have won. It didn't have to be planned. when people are angry and fell that their gov't has betrayed them they hold protests

Khamenei has been fed with wild lies and believed it... saying that the foreign hands were behind the protests. Did he only say this only to divert the rage of the people from this regime's atrocities after the rigged election? Now since his stupid agents cant find evidences to link the US, his tune has changed. How can he be so ignoramus?

A few weeks ago he said they were...now he's say they weren't...tomorrow he might say they might be...the following day he might be...the next day "Pigs may Fly" & the day after that, the "Sun might disappear from the Sky". But whatever happens be sure to keep your ears wide open for more lies...for there'll definitely be lots & lots of "More Lies"!

Well!!! Well!!! The chief Mullah - Khamanei, now wants to say he is not sure that these Great Iranian people were mislead and provoked by US and Britain.

So does he accepet the fact that he is responsible for illegally and immorally jailing, troturing, raping and killing the innocent Iranian people whose only fault was to fight for the truth under the Iranian constitution??

The Iranian people can be sure to take comfort in the fact that this Criminal Khamanei would never go to Bahist but surely be dispatched to Jahannum. Allah would never want to set His eyes upon such a crook and immoral Mullah who has violated every tenet of Islam.

Watch Khamanei change his tune over the days and weeks as he knows his days are numbered. The Mullah Khamanei is scared and rightfully so.

He is NOT saying that evil outsiders are/were NOT behind the rebellion. He is saying that he has not seen convincing proof that Mousavi et al KNEW they were facilitating the already formulated plans of the supposed outsiders who therefore "were not certain that their plan would be carried out." So he is continuing to charge either the US and Britain (or perhaps the always-useful "evil Zionists") with planning the democratic uprising of millions who stunning the world by standing up to naked terror. And he is holding an olive branch out to Mousavi, who, for his part, is keeping his options open by saying 69 had died, thus greatly understating the numbers murdered in the past 10 weeks, and thereby protecting the Islamic regime. Doctors who fled Iran were quoted July 6 in Le Figaro saying that based on consultations with other docs counting the dead in SOME of Tehrans dozens of hospitals, they knew of 92 murdered in just the first three weeks of protest. This leaves out: people who died in other hosptials, who died outside hospitals, who died outside Tehran, and who died in remaining 7 weeks. So by extension, the real figure nationwide in 10 weeks must be in the hundreds, perhaps more.

But of course -- it is not just an olive branch; it is also a threat. Khamenei subjects secondary reform figures to brutal torture, such that they 'see the light,' and then he publicly reminds Mousavi and other top reform leaders that he has not (YET) been convinced that they knew they were aiding evil outsiders when they unleashed demonstrations that were worse than murder. So he is telling Mousavi, 'I could still be convinced you did know, if you sufficiently displease me.'
