Nargess Hashemi: Wrap Me Up in You

09 Jan 2010 17:00No Comments

Nargess Hashemi reproduces scenes from her family's traditional gatherings over the past year. We see line drawings of engagement parties and weddings laid over kitsch wrapping paper and floral tissue paper, exaggerating the sentimentalism of the occasion. But all the while, her family remains oblivious to the chaos and protests that are tearing through the streets of Tehran. Hashemi explores the comfort of tradition -- a placating blanket that relieves ourselves of the responsibility of change. -- Isabelle van den Eynde
