Biography
Brant Mackley is a second-generation art and antiques dealer whose lifelong passion for historic and tribal art began in childhood while attending estate auctions throughout Central Pennsylvania with his mother. Raised along the Susquehanna River, collecting ancient stone artifacts, he developed an early interest in Native American cultures. These experiences led to historic antique Native and tribal art collecting and Brant Mackley Gallery was established in 1996.
Today, the gallery is based in historic Santa Fe, New Mexico, specializing in exceptional antique American Indian and World tribal art. Services offered include collection and object appraisals, conservation consultation, curatorial guidance, and acquisition advisement of single works and collections spanning Native North American, Oceanic, Asian, and African art. Mackley is also recognized for his expertise in late 19th-century through 1930s bicycles and motorcycles and is an esteemed collector of this genre.
With more than 40 years of experience, Brant has placed important works of art and artifacts in private and public collections worldwide. In 2008–2009, he served as guest curator of the exhibition Rainbow Yarn: Navajo Weaving, Germantown Yarn & the Pennsylvania Collection at the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum and co-authored the accompanying catalog. His scholarship includes publication in HALI magazine, London, where his article on Navajo pictorial textiles appeared in 2009. In 2010, he was featured in The Magazine Antiques article “Young Dealers on the Move.”
Brant also served six years on the Board of Governors for ATADA (Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association), including two terms as vice president. Over the years, Brant Mackley Gallery has exhibited at leading national and international art fairs in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Santa Fe.
