This independent dealer, appraiser, and consultant was selected for inclusion in the 2008 edition of "Who's Who in America." He specializes in Asian antiques, silver, and also Russian enamel/Faberge objects. He consults in estate liquidation, and has lectured at the University of Wisconsin and several museums.

Sokolow was trained and educated in New York City and has a B.A. from City College of New York. For over 25 years he was employed by a major dealer, becoming vice president and directing several galleries. He traveled and bought widely here and also in England, Japan, Hong Kong, and China. Clients included world-renowned collectors and dealers. His personal collection has been on museum loan.

In the 1970s Sokolow had a gallery in Winnetka, Illinois. For 20 years he was a senior (certified) member of The American Society of Appraisers, has rendered appraisals for museums and leading law firms, and has assisted insurance companies in cases of potential fraud. He has given evidence in Federal Court in New York State and in the U.S. Customs Court.

For the past 20 years he has been a member of The Oriental Ceramic Society of London, England.

  • Compare options between different types of sellers, i.e., a dealer versus an auction house
  • If you are considering consigning an object for auction, be sure to inquire how the item will be priced, the size of the fee, and the expected amount of time the process may take. Find out what will happen if it doesn't sell.
  • Check the appraiser's professional associations (such as International Society of Appraisers, American Appraisers Association, National Auctioneers Association)
  • Consult an attorney before signing a contract
  • Whatever kind of transaction you decide to enter into, always get a detailed written receipt for your records
