Biography
Terry Etherton, owner of Etherton Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, is a well-known dealer of 19th-, 20th-century, and contemporary photographs. Etherton Gallery opened in 1981.
Well-versed in the history of photography, its practice and craft, Etherton’s large gallery holdings reflect his knowledge and love of ethnographic and Western American landscape photography, including vintage works by Edward S. Curtis, Timothy O’Sullivan, William Henry Jackson, and others.
Etherton’s 30-year career has brought him national and international attention; Etherton Gallery was named by Departures magazine as one of the top 10 photography galleries in the United States. Cited as one of Tucson’s most enduring art spaces, the gallery showcases a mixture of traditional black-and-white and color contemporary imagery with classic black-and-white imagery by many of the masters of photography. Some of the well-known photographers in the Etherton inventory include Ansel Adams, Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind, Danny Lyon, W. Eugene Smith, and others.
Besides the large-scale rotating shows in the Tucson gallery, Etherton regularly participates in art fairs including the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) show in New York City, PhotoL.A., Art Chicago, and Art Miami. Terry Etherton has been a member of AIPAD since 1985 and was member of the board of directors from 1992-2005.
Etherton’s list of institutional clients include the Museum of Modern Art, The Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Amon Carter Museum; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Dallas Museum of Art; The J. Paul Getty Museum; The Library of Congress; The National Portrait Gallery; The International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House; The Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; The Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City; and many others.
Terry Etherton received a B.A. from Southern Illinois University in cinema and photography and an additional B.A. from San Francisco State University from the Center for Interdisciplinary and Experimental Art.
Additionally, Terry Etherton has been an associate member of The American Society of Appraisers since 1992 with a specialty in vintage and contemporary fine art photography.
