Speaker First of all, David and I both came from New York. He came. He lived, I believe, in Brooklyn and I live in the Bronx. And we came from families that worked very hard. David’s mother was incredible and she really worked hard and supported the family. My mother worked as well and. We were both driven. I don’t know if it’s New York City.

Speaker I don’t know what it was about, both of us.

Speaker But we were both driven. I always thought I was given a gift. So for me, it was very easy to study art and design.

Speaker David had more of a struggle about what he wanted to do in life.

Speaker But but clearly, he was driven to succeed. And he’s so smart, really brilliant, that he would be good at anything he does. And he has been good at so many different things, so. Yeah. And it was interesting as well because when we first met. It was an instant chemistry, and I don’t know if our backgrounds had something to do with that which it may or we became at a certain point in life. But when I was introduced to him, I knew immediately we’d be good friends.

Speaker Do you share? If you think just give back to me and say, what do you think that coming from Jewish immigrant families had something to do with the.

Speaker I don’t think the fact that David and I came from Jewish families in New York had had that much to do with who we are and the similarities.

Speaker My parents. My mother was born in this country. Father came when he was like three or four years old.

Speaker So when I knew that my house was not that Jewish. So I don’t think it was that. I think there is something about New York City. And that, you know, that you you’re a Jew in New York City. That bonds people.

Speaker And perhaps it’s that simple, because I’ve just read this book called Outliers and you heard about by Malcolm Gladwell talks very.

Speaker I’m going to be a different example. Is from New York.

Speaker One of Joe’s stories says, My daughter actually says, I mean, the whole the side thing. But. We were talking Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and myself, and then I said to her one day, is it? It doesn’t seem to be another one on the horizon.

Speaker She said, Talk. I said, isn’t it interesting that the three of us. She said, Your old juice. That’s it.

Speaker And oh. From the Bronx at all. From. Yeah. For Ralph. For sure. Ralph.

Speaker Mm hmm. So how did you first.

Speaker I met David while I was beginning to do a film for him.

Speaker I was designing the clothes for Ali McGraw’s, one of Ali McGraw’s films.

Speaker She came to my studio so that we could talk about it. And she brought David. And I knew nothing about David, you know, absolutely nothing. But instantly. He’s so outgoing and so interesting. And instantly we connected. And at that point, I. I just knew that we would be friends and. And I had no idea we’d be that close for such a long time. But it was an instant, instant connection.

Speaker Every day.

Speaker Not now. So much. We used to speak. There was a time when we would speak three times a day. And sometimes that’s it would be when one of us was having difficulty and we needed advice and help and support. Fortunately, we’re both in very good shape these days. And so we don’t speak three times a day, but we simply speak aloud.

Speaker Everybody about.

Speaker This crisis is something you usually should. I know Mike Nichols said to us, he told me to get out of the market and he did not say it casually, which I just think this is terrible. But what kind of advice over the years has David given you?

Speaker Well, David and I, we shared everything.

Speaker Everything that was going on in my life, in his life. And so we were constantly giving each other advice. I don’t know if he paid that much attention to it, what I would say.

Speaker But but he helped me a great deal. He helped me and my relationship with my daughter. He was very involved with me, with my daughter and how she was raised.

Speaker And he would he would see if there were issues or problems or Marsett would call him. And so he would call me. He was. And I always took his advice.
