Cattle are large domesticated bovine ungulates in the genus Bos (family Bovidae, subfamily Bovinae) raised as livestock for meat (beef and veal), milk and other dairy products, hides/leather, and draft work (pulling carts and plows). “Cattle” is the general term for the animals collectively; a cow is an adult female, a bull is an adult male, a heifer is a young female that has not yet had a calf, and a calf is a young animal. Draft cattle are commonly called oxen.
