Stabilizing the Wall

Adding backfill

Filling the Void

GEORGE TAMARO: We decided to backfill in two places, dumping 40,000 cubic yards of sand into the Liberty Street void. In the eastern corner at Greenwich Street, we simply pushed sand into the hole. As we got further to the west, there was some residual structure from the Marriott Hotel still in place. We couldn't get beneath it so we punched holes in the slabs at street level, brought the material to the holes by conveyer, and then dropped it in. Within a matter of days, we were able to fill the hole and stabilize the wall.
