I always thought it was rather brave or foolish or both for MS to claim it had lost its backups. If MS cannot manage their own IT what hope does it give mere customers of their wares?

I agree with your thesis, with a little adjustment. It's not that employees say, "What would Bill do?" so much as Bill said "who will do what I would do?" Most managers will hire people with the same mentality as themselves. Look at Steve Ballmer. Those people do the same, so that eventually the company has a whole lot of employees who are like Gates before they were ever hired and will be so long after they leave. It'll take a few generations, at least, for that pattern of hiring to wear off.
