| HOW CAN A DOCUMENTARY HELP INSPIRE TEACHERS? An outreach and teacher recruitment component was built into the making of The First Year. We envisioned a unique outreach project that would harness the power of film and the Internet to communicate the essential experience of teaching through three dynamic tools: The First Year - A feature length documentary for PBS broadcast intended to focus public awareness on the teacher shortage crisis. (80 minutes) TEACH - A “recruitment” film designed to inspire people to become teachers. (35 minutes) Web Site - www.pbs.org/firstyear. A web site built to offer insight from the teachers in the film, along with guidance, support and vital resources for becoming a teacher. The short film, TEACH, is the primary tool for our teacher recruitment effort. It was created for high school and college students who are about to make career decisions to give them a realistic look at the teaching profession. We are partnering with CalTEACH, the teacher recruitment arm of the California State University, who will distribute the TEACH video in their recruitment centers. We are embarking on a pilot program with Project Pipeline based in Northern California to integrate TEACH into their teacher recruitment efforts. Once the pilot program is launched, this model will be duplicated throughout California and nationwide. We are working with education groups and teacher recruitment organizations across the country to explore how they can use TEACH within their organizations. Some of these include: Recruiting New Teachers National Education Association Council for Greater City Schools Council for the Great City Colleges National Commission on Teaching and America's Future The New Teacher Project Troops to Teachers ERIC Clearinghouse for Teachers American Federation of Teachers American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education |
