The First Year was funded by the California State University (CSU)
and the J. Paul Getty Trust. The California State University (CSU) through the CalTEACH program recruits new teachers into the teaching profession. The California State University acted as an advocate for The First Year with the California State government to secure this funding. CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and his Teacher Education staff will participate in the dissemination of the film to target audiences in California. The J. Paul Getty Trust has long been dedicated to the quality of K-12 education nationwide. The First Year offered the Getty a unique opportunity to support a film about the art of teaching. The project brings creative attention to the world of Los Angeles public schools. By studying how new instructors enter the classroom, it will inform more effective recruitment techniques to bring a stronger generation of teachers to classrooms in the coming years. With its poignant vignettes and honest portrayals, the film reminds us all of why the encouragement of our present and our potential classroom instructors remains so vital. Getty President and CEO Dr. Barry Munitz was a strong champion for the project from its inception. Through funding and support, and the dedicated work of Dr. Munitz and his colleagues, the Getty has been happy to assist this vital project in realizing its mission, and making an essential contribution to southern California and American education. |
