Geneviève DeBose

"I know that I am one person, but one person is better than no one at all."
Geneviève DeBose, 23, Gompers Middle School, South Central Los Angeles, CA

Geneviève's enthusiasm for teaching is boundless. She reaches out to her students and encourages them to explore their potential and celebrate their uniqueness. When she is faced with a discipline problem in her class, she brings the family together and takes action, which is no easy task. During her first year, Geneviève is tested, but her determination and commitment remains intact. Throughout it all, it's her love of her students that fuels her motivation and feeds her spirit.

Hometown

Born in Los Angeles, California. Spent 2 years in Kenya as a child in the Peace Corps. Then later moved to Berkeley, California for her undergraduate degree.

What do you teach?

6th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies.

Why and how did you become a teacher?

I had always worked in summer camps and tutored at the local high schools during the school year. I was involved with the YMCA. When I went to college, I realized that I was not learning about people of color, and I also noticed the students of color I was tutoring in the local high schools were way behind the other kids. I saw how they were falling through the cracks. I wanted to do something about that. I enjoyed working with young people and found that teaching was the best option for me to pursue my goals.

What did you encounter in your first year of teaching?

It was overwhelming. I had to learn on the job. I had to come up with a procedure for my class, starting with how I would take attendance. I put in a lot of hours working into the night. There are so many things to tackle at once, but what kept me going was that I loved all of my kids.

After The First Year

Geneviève moved to Oakland to spend a year at Mills College to acquire her teaching credentials.
