Maurice Rabb, 24, 99th St. Accelerated School, South Central Los Angeles, CA Maurice goes beyond the classroom when he discovers that the system does not have one of his student's best interest at heart. When it becomes clear that the system won't provide a solution, he fixes the problem himself, tutoring the child after school. Maurice derives strength from his mother and sisters as he takes on a difficult and seemingly impenetrable bureaucracy. Yet, we see his joy in teaching when he stands in front of his kindergarten class. The kids' faces light up, and so does his. We know that whatever hardship and disappointment Maurice faces outside the classroom fades away when he is connecting with his students. Hometown Born in Chicago, Illinois. Grew up in Moline, Illinois. What do you teach? Kindergarten. Why and how did you become a teacher? I was outraged at the education in the lower economic region where kids were not getting attention. I wanted to make an impact. The defining moment for me came when I learned that my little sister, who was about to enter the 8th grade, was reading at a 3rd grade level. I felt crushed knowing that I was on this path of education and talking about learning when my own sister had been overlooked by the system. I wanted to know how and why that could happen. What did you encounter in your first year of teaching? I didn't see that the kids who had special needs had access to services that they were legally entitled to have at the school speech therapy, mental health counseling, etc...I saw a lot of waste, and there was a problem with the allocation of resources. It didn't always feel that the kids were the main focus of the school. After The First Year Maurice plans on getting a joint degree in law and education. He’s interested in working with non-profit educational organizations involving law, global education, and politics. His ultimate goal is to be where he can make the most impact on the kids.
