hoping to have the pleasure of “visiting you at Mount Vernon
on my way to James river at wh. place there is a quantity of
public stores” – disappointed – Write by Major Farlee
“I
render you my sincere thanks for your kind opinion of the
disposition of the troops on the Ohio
– we have been able only to recruit six companies out
of [struck: ten] [inserted:
the] ten that was intended.
Three of them are now on the March for Fort Mc
Intosh & Pitt where we shall be under the necessity of
posting them through the winter – One co<mpan>y has gone with the commrs who are to hold the treaty with
the Indians at the great Miami, and two companies have taken
post at the mouth of the Muskinguerr. – The remaing four
companies [struck: was] [inserted:
will hope] to be recruited and marched early in the Spring –
The
Indians generally have discovered a restlessness and
discontent with the treaties which they made at Fort Schuyler
and McIntosh the last year –“
He goes on to say that they believe they have been
deceived by U.S. in being told that Br. had ceded the posts,
and are incited by British or refugee emissaries –
continually embittering their minds.
