"A good director has a vision of what they want the movie to look like, what they want to express. You're painting pictures with film -- with sound and light."

"Debbie [Allen] approaches things with passion and intuition rather than an academic kind of approach. She says, 'Johnny I like the look of this, I like the way this feels.' In our pre-production she showed me a couple of pictures that she liked and images from various films, and we decided on a look for the picture."

Production Designer: John Iacovelli

"Production designers create dreams and fantastical places. We've created this fantasy of a 1943 Harlem apartment, and it's all just wood and plastic. We have a very convincing illusion going."
