Ask the Filmmaker | General Discussion I think that the movie, as well as the web site, highlights the difficulties that immigrants face when they enter the United States. Unfortunately, our policy on immigration thus far has been so rigid and strict that more and more immigrants have had to enter the country through illegal means. A policy change must occur now, to make the immigration process swifter and easier. Evan Needham, MA I was surprised the learn that immigrants with a high level of education are forced to perform low level jobs just because they are immigrants. Needham, MA I was surprised that of all of the immigrants in the world, less than 2% come to the US Vince Torres Kenndleton, TX I saw hope, necessity, willingness, wishful hope, frustration, worry, determination. I heard negativity, noisy, upset people, opportunity learning, opportunity arriving, silence of death, crying of pain. This first part makes me think about how lucky I am to have my family, a place to live, a job where I can work steady and be safe. I am also thankful for the kind of person that my boss is and how nice he and his family is. Noe Rayo Ontario, OR The impressions that I saw were tearing eyes of sadness, seriousness of finding and trying to make money. What I saw was pain, hurt, aggresion, and anger. And the hard work for 15 cents each brick.. Sadness of crying for a fellow worker, friend or family member that was killed when the wall collapsed. My thoughts and feelings were unfair and hurt to see my people suffer the way they were living in the huge city like that. This video made me feel like crying because is was heart felt from my point of view. I should be happy for what I have to this day. Bridget McMahon, bridgetmcmahon@usa.net Longmeadow, MA I just wanted to commend PBS for documenting the immigrant stories and struggles of the Hispanic people coming to the USA. While I am not of Hispanic heritage, I am fluent in Spanish and I have worked very closely with the Puerto Rican community in Springfield, MA-- each culture's story is incredible and unique in its own right. Keep up the great work and thanks again for showing American's how multicultural the US is today! Mike Cotto, mikecottoart@hotmail.com Houston, TX I think this is a verry powerful film. I only caught the last half of it on PBS but I had heard of its making on KPFT Pacifica Radio. I would like to buy a copy of it but have't been able to find it. WHERE CAN I FIND IT! To purchase a video copy of THE CITY (LA CIUDAD) for home and educational use contact: Jay Nichols, weezer@unbounded.com Newport Beach, Calif. You might as well rename PBS to "Mexican Propaganda TV". I have never seen such a bunch of idiotic hogwash in my life. Illegal aliens need to be rounded up and **ejected**. How dare PBS insult Americans by producing such manure. Alfred Eliason eliason@gte.net Just propaganda The idea or message that present-day massive cross-border immigration by Latinos from Central America is the same or similar to the initial landing of the Mayflower and its occupants from Europe is sheer propaganda. There were many reasons why the early immigrants embarked upon a voyage to a new, unknown land; but chief among those was an effort ot escape intolerant religious oppression by the Catholic Church. Latinos, on the other hand, embark upon their move to Norte America because of immense local overcrowding caused by the Caholic Church's obsession with procreation. Of course, because of continued high birth rates when in Norte America, Latinos will never escape the penalties of overcrowding for long. Franklin Hayes Andrew cik_melo99@hotmail.com opened eyes these short films that I saw last night really allowed me to see the lives of people who earnestly put their entire heart into their family back home and the work they do in la ciudad, I live in NYC and know how hard it is in this concrete jungle, my heart goes out to all those who had a part in this film and more, those who come here and try to make a better life for their families. john ciminello p2jcim@cds.com La Ciudad In this film, I see the tears of loss in my grandmother's eyes. She worked for forty years as a seamstress and suffered little pay, ulcers, arthritis, blackouts. I see the etched lines of frustration and resignation in my grandfather's hands. He sacrificed his life so his children could live. I too cried at the end of this film. The village of all my ancestors is deserted. Even the women and the children are gone. We're immigrants all. Thank you to all who made this film. alvin delacroix la ciudad My sister tells me that we are monsters because we feel nothing about everything. I assure her that we have just shut down. I am thirty-two yesterday and haven't cried since I was thirteen. I don't know why I cried for this. Yanina celiayanina@aol.com La Bella Ciudad! I am trully delighted that someone had the courage and sensitivity to tell true stories of all our brothers and sisters who have come to this country to have a better life. Latinos, are not the only ones that come to this country without papers. From all over the world, and its something that is not going to change. We the people that have the privilege to be legal in this country have to be grateful and help those less fortunate. We are not different people, we are all the same specie. And we all should try to understand one another, because we all live in the same planet and we have nowhere else to go. Winnie I hope... ... that this film and Website will open the eyes of Americans to the immigrant experience. It's a great first step - all that remains is that the right peoplein the right places will see, sympathize, and more importantly, ACT. Zachary Can't wait to see this again! I watched this brilliant and beautiful film at the Sundance Film Festival. I recommend that you see it ... more than once. It is so rich and textured, deep and resonant. A great experience you shouldn't miss! Robin Robinb@earthlink.net new americans Our country is made up of people from other places. Except for native americans, we are all immigrants. Why not celebrate the diversity of cultures in our country? The mix of ideas, food, music and arts enrich our nation and make it the success that it is today. People new to a land are there because they choose to be and may appreciate it more than those who were born here. Why are Americans becoming so scared and phobic about having those that are "different" come to there communities? Are we being brainwashed by politicians to fear? The Latino immigrants featured in this beautiful film are just like many new immigrants when they arrived here, trying to make it in a new place during hard times. We should welcome and embrace those people who bring forth new ideas, newfound nationalism and make America the interesting place that it is today. Jane |
