"So much of the production was one camera with one subject that I usually didn't get to see the video footage until after the fact, in the office. I didn't really feel connected, but Homecoming was different. A big parade at the school, an important football game, all the kids scattered around. We had video cameras covering everything. I was pumped. It was even better for the Ozomatli music video, because now we had film cameras going on top of the video. We had been planning it for weeks and it went all according to plan, real smooth. By Graduation we had the big production days down so well, I was sorry to see it end."

"Shooting 'Senior Year' was one of the most incredibly challenging experiences of my life. Not only did I have to develop a trustworthy relationship with each of my characters but also their friends, family and the Fairfax student body. Being sensitive to the issues at hand while concentrating on capturing the story for the screen was quite often overwhelming because the kids were dealing with life changing issues. I learned immediately, that teenagers are much smarter then they are given credit for. The image of the surly teen was demystified for me and I know that translates through the series. Each and every one of the kids I had contact with me impressed me. They are talented, strong, independent thinkers. They are the trend setters not to be underestimated. I am proud to have been a part of the show!

"The first time that I realized that I was back in high school was when Fairfax security stopped me in the hall because they thought I was a student. Everything has changed since I was in high school in the 90's. The kids look older, the music has dramatically changed and the issues they are dealing with seem more intense. Imagine if someone would have followed you around in high school. This is a time period in our lives that has the most impact on our futures. What will life be like after you leave 'the nest' ? When I look back at the series, I am amazed to see how many decisions my kids had to make in one year. I am honored that I was able to maneuver through someone's life and capture those simple moments that time makes us sometimes forget. Production was strenuous and at times I felt as if I was getting too involved. I can't wait for the world to experience what I did. It has changed my life forever!"
--Jerry Henry, Unit Director

"I began on Senior Year as the line producer in August of 1999, just as the unit directors were brought in to meet the kids they'd be following. For the next nine months, I spent equal time in the production office, at Fairfax High, on the cell phone in between the two, or at the computer writing grants and dreaming up schemes to raise the money to pay for it all. We emerged from the production's 45th week (whew!) with more than 1200 hours of footage and Ozo's film intro in the can. This wealth of raw material was then transformed by the Senior Year editing team with incredibly positive energy and they crafted deeply told stories that also have just the right, light touch. In my book, they earned the title "Heroes of Post Production." Producing Senior Year with and for David Zeiger has been life-changing for me, and I am grateful that so many have been touched by it. What a great project to work on!"
