Infrastructure
Another
serious problem in colonias are inadequate roads. Although
most colonias are located in arid climates, flash flooding
can be a serious problem. Some communities were built on dried lakebeds
or creekbeds that flood during heavy rains.
A
majority of colonias have dirt roads and no surface draining
systems. When high waters move through these communities massive
flooding can occur. This means many families have to evacuate their
homes and often high waters contribute to health concerns because
of faulty sewer systems.
