Alan:  Talk about some of the things that really sustain you in life, marriage and friendship.  You've been married for 44 years right, since 1963.  What's your secret? That's a long time in Hollywood.

Bob Newhart:  I think a lot of it's laughter, I really do.  You can have a fight, but then you can walk away from it and come back to it--the distance, again, that laughter gives you.  Most of the long marriages in Hollywood are comedians.  Jack Benny and Mary Livingston and George Burns, Gracie Allen.  One of the things that comedy does, and as you mentioned, it gives you distance.  It allows you to move away from something and then come back to it with different eyes.
