POLL: Did The Republican National Convention Address Your Concerns?

This week on the JOURNAL, Bill Moyers spoke with media and politics expert Kathleen Hall Jamieson about the Republican National Convention.

What issues are on top of your agenda? How would you rate the convention speakers' handling of them?

The designers of the MBT shoes are quick to point out that this is not a shoe in the ordinary sense. That it is an anti shoe of sorts. The concept is that normal shoes are against human nature, that are body is designed for walking barefoot on soft and uneven ground, and this footwear is more in line with that. With a specially designed sole, wearing MBT shoes improves posture and your gait and relieves pressure on your back. It also gives your muscles, including often neglected muscles, a nice workout whether walking or standing in place. By working a lot of different muscle groups, this footwear also leads to a more stimulated metabolism and thus burns more calories.

The key element behind the MBT Athlete Shoes, muscle and calorie burning benefits is the patented sole construction. The core elements of this design include a specially designed shank, PU midsole with balancing area and the Masai sensor. All of which work in concert to create a soft surface that it like walking on a beach. MBT M.Walk shoes promote an unstable environment for your feet, which gives all the benefits I've listed above.

The MBT Chapa shoes is available in two different sole designs, which is something relatively new. The first type is the integrated shank construction, which is the original sole design found on the styles like the MBT Sport or the Kisumu sandals. The second, and newer design is the dual board construction. This design offers a little lower profile than the integrated shank sole, but still preserves the foot's natural rolling movement and gives all the same benefits.

MBT Lami shoes come in a variety of different styles that fit all types of needs and occasions. The sport collection is for avid fitness walkers and includes the Sport, Sport High and the M.Walk. The casual collection is for everyday wear or for work and includes the Moto boots, the Changra and the Tunisha. The last class of footwear is the sandal collection. This was limited to only a few styles, but has recently been expanded to include the Ema and the Habari.

Choosing a quality brand name fitness footwear like MBT Sport shoes will prevent you from having to buy many more pairs in the future. If you buy quality the first time around, you may pay a little more, but will save in the end by not having to repeatedly buy more over the years. Plus, with all the benefits to your body, you'll have less expensive medical bills down the line.

I'm very concerned about the possiblity of a 1st staged EU-CDA Integration Agreement later to morph into an expected EU-CDA-USA Integration Agreement. This North American and European trade block of 850 million people is seen as the only way to compete against China and India. Several comments in the Cdn media try to connect the current financial crisis with this devasting agreement as a solution. The main focus of this suppra-agreement are in brief --free flow of good (Cdn water?) ---capital--(monetary change?)---services--(little or no control over negotiating internal govnt contracts---free flow of workforce--(giant employers have the only right to move or recind such movement of their management and workforce to (new markets)of the other treaty countries. I have written e-mails to various Cdn media ---even during our Cdn election--no response just more editorials and spin on how great and inevitable this is all going to be for the EU and the USA---looks like Cda and her resources just kind of disappear. Please consider this as a future topic---I can't think of a worse scenario for the environment or the people. Take care ---thank you ---it's hard to find alternative news or anlysis...

I am most concerned about how new job creation can occur. I don't think the millions of manufacturing jobs that have been shipped overseas will return. It will take entirely new industries, and I fear we are educationally and technically damaged.

Asher (Sept. 8) caused me to wonder about defectors. McCain's hoping to win Hillary supporters to Sarah. Do the Dems have any idea how many Republicans may have left their party because they or someone related is ill and has no health care? Or is it only Dems who've lost their jobs or who can't find better than part time work?

BB: Bashful Barry Obama has twice the intellect and 10 times the heart of the mercenary golum that used to be Action Figure McCain. I knew McCain had sticky fingers when I read about his Savings and Loan antics. Now he is the worst enemy of our collective mind as he fetches for the NAB (big ole media). When he finishes corporotizing and churchifying the Supreme Court it will be like the heavy duty version of Margaret Atwood's Gideon. (I can still hear Bobby Duvall humping and puffing: Oscar worthy acting.) Sarah ain't acting!

Damn Blatant Repost (but true):Freddie and Fannie (measured by a debt bigger than the yearly GDP of China or Japan) typify a system precisely designed to extract more taxes for private profit. The "government" is not broken, it is sucking strong like a Dyson for those who own it, feeding the fruits of our labors into their accounts. The question is: How low an internal pressure can this old shell of an economy take before it buckles. (Maximum warp, Scotty!) Maybe that is the plan. Depressions may be the way capitalists refresh the labor force: Crush all hope and resistance with economic malaise and restart the monopoly game with slave labor. (Creditors give worse beatings than cops.)
All wealth comes from labor except natural resources (land), and it takes labors of conception (mind) and toil (body) to utilize nature. So everything in our economy originates as labor, old or new. Those able who refuse to labor are parasites: Those who thwart our labors are a menace: And those who repress laborers needs are despots and state terrorists.
While we decry the cartoon character with which McCain has insulted us. (A trophy hunting sportscaster from a slushy hellhole.) our attentions are deflected from the financial cage being built around us. How many more trillion in their play money can they pile on our backs?
No one is asking Delaware Joe and Bashful Barry the key economic questions. McShame says finance ain't his thing: He prefers damaging collateral. Sarah the Impaler (and the whole trailer full of Heaths) have not paid taxes or fines on their illegal trophy hunting business in thirty years. (Them Polie Bears ain't endangered, they's $5,000 a hide. Foreign policy is gunning gorillas in Gabon.)
Ameerika, Ahmeerika : Ask not how much taxes you should pay; Demand to designate their purpose right on the form. Let the elite wealthy pay interest on their own usury. Maybe they can work it off in China

Shane Algarin: Superb post on energy market. I wish you had money to run for office. I'm down to my last $20, need it for $2 canned pepsi on the plane.
News: Steelhearted Bob has brought aboard (Believe it or not) a weiner (David Zweiner) to manage Wachovias hedge fund demise. Respected for his reserved nature at the Hartford weiner gets a couple million up front just for bringing respectability and his personal relations with regulators and the FED aboard. This corprolite is sinking faster than the $15 big board price suggests. Warning: Go to the credit union and avoid this fee vampire bank.
Billy Bob: If we get out our chainsaws we can perform a quick mitosis on this sucker, but you'd have to stay in the warring and speculatin' half while we got single payer health care and full employment in ours. I guess winning the big game and shooting a moose would be funner than Hell (but just barely. We'd have all the good states, windmills and no oil slicks on the beach. We could hoist Franklin's Unite or Die rag and you could salute the stars and bars. Ya-a-a-a Hoo, Beau and Luke!

But it ain't that simple is it? Remember when Captain Kirk got split in two in the transporter?

DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW!?!?
We could be driving 150 mile range electric SUVs with technology of the 1990s. Instead of treating our sewage and letting it flow into the ocean, we could be turning it into gas using algae. We could also turn every dump into a fuel refinery using garbage. Sure beats turning our food into fuel! It's time to send the market a signal. Congress, Mr. President, we're waiting.
It's well past the time for the Democrats and Republicans to grow a spine and win back our respect. They can be much more persuasive with honesty, rather than deception. The offshore drilling ban has been around for decades. High gas prices have not. A ban on offshore drilling is not a significant explanation for high gas prices.
The top reasons for high gas prices:

1. Lack of competition translates into paying more at the pump.(Exxon merges with Mobil, ChevronTexaco, BPArco, etc )

2. Were the diplomatic skills of this administration up to par, oil prices would be far more stable. Invading Iraq has only brought instability. Angering Russia by placing our military and our missiles at their doorstep only brings more instability.

3. If the dollar was as strong today as it was when Bush took office, $140 would fetch closer to 2 barrels of oil.

4. CAFE standards are too weak. Future technology is promising, but fuel efficiency could double using old technology.

It seems like our President wants high oil prices. But that would make him an oil man...inconceivable!

WE NEED ATTACK DOGS BRAVE ENOUGH TO STAND UP TO BIG OIL! Instead we get politicians too eager to roll over. Send a message to congress and the administration that we're on to their game. We know the real reasons for high gas prices.

to Grady Lee Howard, et al,
Sept. 9, 9:01AM Those of you that stick your heads in the sand of hyperbole, over-the-top, throw the baby out with the bath water thoughts, myopically invest your little gray cells on a one-way avenue.

If violent revolution is your quest, you may find what you seek in some African nations. Why hang around with the looser USA?
Break free! Seek your level of insanity! It may be out there!

Did you imply that you believe Obama is better qualified than McCain and therefore is qualified to become president? Prehaps your little gray cells of logic have been hanging around the wrong substances.

Billy Bob, Florida where the DNP now wants our votes.

Bill;
I've been a fan since right after graduating from seminary and watching your series on Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth. On a related note, Susan Eisenhower said yesterday tha McCain's choice of Palin illustrates a focus on pro-life and biblical values instead of the economy and world affairs. I couldn't agree more.
I'm scandalized that so little vetting was done, and that McCain went with a "game changer" in order to win, instead of choosing a Vice President who could well serve.
She's was raised in the Assembly of God Church--and with not intrinsic bias, that means her worldview was formed there. So, she's a dispensationalist on top of being a Pentecostal. What's McCain? He was raised Episcopalian but attends a Baptist churchj.
Don't you agree that the faith belief systems of McCain and Palin predispose us to very similar governmental practices and assumptions as we got with Bush/Cheney? Not to be overlooked is that John Ashcorft is an AG!
This is a huge problem, and to have Palin painted as a "committed Christian hockey mom" both overlooks and ignores the underlying facts.
Since Pastor Rick of Saddleback Church so glowingly introduced Americans to the concept of a "Christian worldview", how about a bit of an exploration of how that translates into belief system, ethical framework and decision making?

All the best

Ben

Ms. Jamison mentioned that Sarah Palin did not cut funding for special needs students while Governor of Alaska. However, I have searched both factcheck.org and google and have not found any indication one way or the other. Could you please direct us to the proper documentation on this claim.

ZOLTAN: Bring back the LA Riots, people need to vent when they are deceived and screwed over. Last night David Letterman preached for 20 minutes that humanity is doomed by climate change. We were doomed by people like you and Billy Bob before climate change was known.

Obama is a better person, and more fit than McCain, any rational observer must admit. But our system of governance has embraced inevitable doom. They are of a piece. To save humanity we must reject this system in its entirety.
Joining with others like beecham to expose and punish those who hasten our demise is an act of good faith. Trying to delay or avoid this necessary revolution is an act of bad faith.
I believe one can play politics as usual as one plays a video game (voting for Obama), but I don't look for results in the imaginary.
Cruelty is real though. It is because of people like ZOLTAN that people like Obama need body guards. Take your thinly veiled racism elsewhere. I'm sure even night crawlers must have a web site by now.

Grady Lee Howard
My concern is that Bush and Cheney actually WILL depart. There have been times when I have doubted that will happen. Though I suppose it does not matter. The powers that be will be the same whoever the president happens to be. Actually, if Bush/Cheney refused to leave office that just might be enough to motivate people to do something besides asking Diebold who they should vote for.

81% as of 9/8/08. As I expected from Moyers Lib following. Osama or B has been a senator for a 143 days and these mutts want him as president. What fools. When the Republic fails they will beg for a strong leader not an American idol. Both parties has sold up the river. Keep the powder dry. Just like B said in San Fran they cling to their guns. He forgets we do not have the luxury to be surrounded by armed gaurds set on kill. Remember the L.A riots?

Ahser Bob White 8-8-08 2:22PM You may be right about the RNP.

What about the DNP?

Obama said that...I first voted against Florida's votes counting before I voted for them to count. Did you notice he had already locked up the nomination?

If you are looking for a ray of honesty, you may want to check out Ralph Nader. The truth! You can't handle the truth! Cause Ralph has been warning us for decades and
your DNC would not let him in the debates!

The power is in the hands of the people, but we keep opening our fingers and letting it slip through, and then we blame a "Party for our failure to stand up. A "Party" decides a State must vote after other States have voted or their votes can not count! So the ACLU says there is legislation---Guess end arounds are OK if you pass legislation!
ACL--Who?

It is apparent that both of the dominate political parties are not addressing the concerns of the public. One has been disappointing and the other seems to repeat itself in the context of its oration. Like twins just wanting to vie for the top, one will come out ahead in November. however, what about the we the people? Why can't we make the necessary changes in our daily lives that will in turn be a more direct approach to what ails us? I do not believe any one elected is going to fix anything. I am making pro-activism my main goal in my future. I may not be able to control Washington's universe, but I can control my own.

I agree with the other posters regarding the disappointment in Jamieson's analysis of Palin and lauding her for keeping her child. For once, Jamieson disappointed me with her "expert" analysis. Palin is not a hero or should be applauded for doing something that many other women do all the time...choosing to keep a special needs child. And to say the 62% cut is a lie is one thing, but let's remind voters that she is a Social Conservative, meaning her fundamental belief is to cut social programs that help the needy. Yes, Nancy Reagan was against stem cell research until Ronald came down with Alzheimer's. It is the lack of empathy that pervades the Republicans...until it effects them.

Yes, Bill, the RNC convention did address (answer) my concerns ... the Republican Party is as corrupt and dishonest as has been suspected and alledged. Republicans can not truthfully address or represent anything about our society. Their approach is all about smears and lies directed at their opponent(s): No public interest related to compassion for the poor and sick who do not have the Republicans private sector health insurnace; fair and just opportunity absent a priviledge; pursuit of peace in place of war; and stewardship of our county and our planet.

Time To Begin Again
I think the time has come where it is not enough to change the skipper of a sinking ship,
that change of any kind will right a once great country that has slipped under the sea.
Change cannot mend a structure so rotted away by greed.
It is time only for one action, and one alone.
It is time to begin again, start anew, while we still can.
And even if it is already too late, we surely all must try.
Jefferson would have agreed.
Don't you?

Note: Happy anniversary, beecham! Will the Bushites light more candles before they depart?

I have a question for Ms Jamieson - "Even if you don't agree with the ideological implication politically of some of the policy positions on the social right, there is something appealing about a person who knows that she's carrying a Down syndrome child and makes a decision to carry to term with all of the consequences for the family as a result. That's a decision that should be applauded. And so you can ask..."

Mrs Palin is again abortion. That is a stated fact. She is 44 years old and knows where babies come from and she choose to get pregnant knowing all of the risks. Tell me again why she should be applauded?

I have a serious question for Kathleen Jamison. She said the Republican right watches FOX news, while the Democratic left watches NPR and watches PBS. So we hear what we want to hear, or have our beliefs stregthened.

I'm a Democrat, and I watch PBS and listen to NPR because I believe I am more likely to hear accurate reporting there than on CNN or other commercial networks. Sometimes they get it wrong, but usually they are far less biased, and I have heard corrections for errors that I do not hear elsewhere.

Am I wrong? Jamison's comment seemed to imply otherwise.

Re: Linda j’s response to bill’s post

The Republican strategy ushered in with the Reagan presidency has been to undo gov’t social programs (social security, medicare, public housing, welfare, injured workers’ compensation, affirmative action initiatives, college student loan programs, etc.). The Bush tenure has worked hard at eliminating or reducing the effectiveness of these programs. That strategy is self evident and continuous. Bill is accurate. It is the same strategy of systemic change that the McCain initiative hopes to complete.
Stanley Wrzyszczynski

What issues are on top of your agenda?
The “MONEY PARTY” stated, “THIS IS FOR YOU”! “YOU WANT CHANGE” - but denied the people the fundamental right to “EXPRESS THEIR WILL ON ALL ISSUES”! Denied the “FREEDOM to participate in POWER”!
The speakers speak of, “YOU WANT CHANGE”! The speaker speak of “FREEDOM”; In fact, there is no “CIVIC FREEDOM”! FREDOM is, “participating in POWER”!
“I got a call that two of our producers had been BLODIED by the police, Goodman”

“Hunting down innocent animals... human beings” such as,
“Salazar suffered a bloody nose after being dragged, face-down on the ground” etc.
Speaker of “MONEY PARTY” speak of CHANGES as they practice oppressive power!
A real “CHANGE” is when people demand to SET UP A
“ CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION”
to

“AMEND THE CONSTITUTION”!
EMPOWER the PEOPLE TO “EXPRES THEIR WILL” on ALL ISUES! EMPOWER the PEOPLE to “FREEDOM of POWER to PARTICIPATE'!
THE POWER SHOULD BE IN the “WILL OF THE PEOPLE”! It is our live, our destiny our COUNTRY and IT should be decided by OUR WILL - the “WILL OF THE PEOPLE”, and NOT by the dysfunctional CONGRESS, SENAT, EXECUTIVE ORDERS or corrupt JUSTICE SYSTEM!
“WE SHOULD DECIDE” our DEMOCRACY by “FREEDOM to PARTICIPATE to POWER”, FREEDOM to “EXPRES OUR WILL on ALL ISSUES”!

re: bill's post

bill says ''On the other hand the Republicans propose a strategic change to the system that precedes a change in policies.''

Can you back this up ?

Please spell out the strategic change you claim to have heard spouted by McCain, because I didn't hear ANYTHING strategic.

Re: bill's post on system change as opposed to policy change.

It seems to me that Obama's policy ideas are totally framed in system change. His big-picture approach is what captivates me. (Granted, I watched both conventions on C-Span, so I got entire speeches from all the speakers sans commentary.)

McCain, on the other hand told war stories and spouted the same tired bromides from conventions past. He paid lip service to systemic change, but offered not one solid suggestion as to how he would bring this about.

I won't comment on all the things said and how strongly I feel on some issues. It's wasted breath (typing) to a people who are divided and a government who doesn't listen.

I am depressed - once again we see the machine begin it's divide and conquer strategy. And it works. As the people go after each other - the politicians win. As the people argue over this or that person or ideal - the corporations win. Candidates approach not to hear what is really happening in America - but only for our money.

I just wonder - is there truly any hope for America to survive? We've allowed policies to ruin us, shame us, drive us to poverty both morally and financially, sacrificed our health - all for what?

The United States of America is the Divided States of America - not black or white states but blue or red states. While the few make their profits on the backs of the millions - and more millions of people are beat down in depression - Is there hope for the People?

Thank you G.L. Monahan for your post.

As an individual I am Pro-Life, however I would NEVER EVER tell another woman what to do with their own bodies. Over the years I've had many female friends who've agonize over their choice to abort or keep their babies for various reasons, such as health, rape and even financial.

And I share your belief against
going to war and killing innocent children in the name of collateral damage. (I guess Pro-Life does not extend to other peoples children according to Mrs. Palin and the Republican Party) I also share your view on capital punishment as well.
And I would like to add that I am also against hunting down innocent animals purely for the entertainment of human beings (which Mrs. Palin is also very fond of)

How anyone can call themselves Pro-Life and tote around a gun and get excited about sending peoples children to war is beyond me. The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach.

Sincerely
Linda M

The RNC did not speak to me. The GOP is selling fear. The same thing the Bush Administration has been selling for the past 8 years. The RNC just presented it in a new, perhaps fresher looking and more charismatic package. My question is as we listen to the messages from both parties: Are we voting against what we are afraid will happen, or are we voting for what we want to happen.

Both parties are proposing change but there is a significant difference.

The Democrats are proposing numerous policy changes. Nothing unusual here as elections are always full of promises of policy changes.

The Republicans are proposing not only policy changes but arguably more importantly a change in the system.

History shows us that the odds of effecting meaningful policy changes in the current political environment is small. Change the environment, change the system, and the odds of meaningful policy changes increases.

IMO, that is at the heart of the difference between the donkeys and elephants.

Which argument will most appeal to Independents? Answer that and you know how the election will turn out.

The thing that came through from both conventions is that both tickets are proposing change. However, there the similarity stops. The Democrats propose changing policies in a tactical sense. On the other hand the Republicans propose a strategic change to the system that precedes a change in policies.

Going after the tactical changes without touching the strategic ones is politics as usual and is hardly change. Every election is full of tactical change promises which usually go nowhere because of the system is broken. In view of that reality, fixing the system is clearly needed in order to effect meaningful tactical changes.

I was frankly disappointed with Kathleen Hall Jamieson's analysis and aghast when she committed the same sin she had just accused the media of often committing.

She said the media has reported innuendo as fact without fact checking first. Her characterization of NPR and CNN as partisan was based simply on the assumption that because people that listen to and watch them accept the Democratic view of the facts and those watching FOX news and listening to Rush Limbaugh accept the Republican view of the facts, they are partisan. She claimed there was spin and distortion on BOTH sides without evidence of this. If one side is telling the truth, does that make them partisan?

She assumed and stated NPR and CNN were partisan, which I would dispute unless provided with evidence. The flaw in her logic, of course, is that it could just as easily be that NPR and CNN told the truth and were not biased but the truth as they reported it was insufficient to sway partisan Republicans. That there was a neutral acceptance from those who read print journalism does not prove her point at all without some fact checking. Newspapers can have both left and right wing and accurate points of views, that leave readers puzzled as to which is the truth. This is due to their greater diversity of stories and opinions they allow in their format. The same argument applies in that if the truth is reported along with a partisan argument to it, then it still may be hard to understand which is true. If only an accurate report is made, then it is easy to believe the truth, but if a conflicting, dissenting, partisan inaccurate report is added, it is not as easy to decide the truth, but that does not make the truth false. Of course this could go the other way. I am aware of studies showing bias by FOX and Limbaugh. Can she produce the same evidence for NPR or CNN?

By unwittingly perpetuating the right wing's biased media charge without facts, Ms. Jamieson is in my opinion smearing NPR and possibly CNN with the label left wing media and I object, because this has been a tactic I have seen used all too often. While I do not believe she is partisan, she should be more careful in the facts she is presenting. I defend NPR here because I trust them and Ms. Jamieson should be more careful.

This is the mistake much of the "objective" media makes. They assume if they tell the truth as accurately and objectively as they can, then it will be accepted. With the advent of partisan, biased media on the right and then partisan blogging on the left and right, truth and fact have become harder to discern. Ms. Jamieson made this point but then fell into the trap of making it appear that all media is partisan. With the absence of a credible media to fact check, people fall prey to to the type of emotional appeals the Republicans and increasingly the Democrats are using. Our Democracy is now at risk in a similar way as pre-Nazi Germany. If the press will not police itself and condemn biased and incompetent reporting in their own ranks, then they will become increasingly irrelevant. The only ones exposing this malfeasance currently are the Daily Show and Colbert Report. Sadly, because the press has failed to act, the comedy shows are.

Dear Mr. Moyers,

Please ask your guests not to use the term "PRO LIFE" when referring to anti abortionists.

I am PRO LIFE! I am against CAPITOL PUNISHMENT.

I am against going to war and killing innocent children in the name of collateral damage.

I am against going to war except (unequivocally) in defense of my country.

I am for the right of women to control the health of their own bodies.

"PRO LIFE" as it is used and misused by the Evangelical Christian conservative politic is HYPOCRITICAL and a LIE. I can abide that they may choose not to abort any fetus. That is their right, and I would defend their right as vehemently as I defend the civil rights of anyone. However, I am offended by the notion that a person who would send my child off to war, call themselves PRO LIFE.

Please use the reference "ANTI ABORTIONIST" in the future.

Thank you.
G.L. Monahan

In Bill Moyer's defense, the format of each show is determined a week or more in advance of the actual viewing date and the production and editing of any given video story is a time consuming process. Bill and Amy are partners in various journalistic pursuits and I doubt that the Moyer's staff intentionally acted to ignore the attack on Amy's first amendment rights. Bill has been on Democracy Now several times, he has often been given the full hour to discuss his views. Maybe it's time for Bill to recipicate and have her on the Journal !

Kathleen Hall Jamieson was at her very best and presented analysis that was insightful. We must remember that she labors with a massive disability of non-partisanship, that her position and institution would be threatened if she were frank or went beyond polite borders. Every expert on TV wears a shock collar and avoids the invisible fence installed by the conservative and repressive powers that be, who guard their masters' wealth and prerogatives.
So Kathleen, that was pretty good speech from one who is muzzled, leashed, and crated at night.

That is why we say at Figgers that Moyers has been a hostage 220 fateful days. (He'll someday outstrip the Maverick.)

Why did Moyers (last night, 9/5) also ignore what 95% of the rest of the media ignored during the RNC: the fact that journalists were injured and charged with felonies outside the convention center? I fully expected Bill to launch a withering attack on the St. Paul police and associated law enforcement groups. After all, they arrested Amy Goodman, for God's sake, and Moyers has said--in Minneapolis, I remind you--that Ms. Goodman is one the greatest journalists in America. And yet he says nothing? If you haven't seen the video of her being literally jerked around, it's available. As an irony, the PBS show "Now" appears locally prior to "The Journal", and an interview with Goodman aired minutes before Moyers' show. It's not like it wasn't immediately on MY mind, having just seen what happened to her. I don't get it.

After watching your program with Kathleen Hall Jamieson, I have to say I take GREAT offense with her characterizing Mrs. Palin as admirable for (choosing) to not abort her child after she found out her baby had Down Syndrome. Her choice is no more heroic than a women who chooses to terminate her pregnancy because she can't bare to bring a child who is suffering into a a world that is already filled with hardship and pain.

You can spin Mrs. Palin and the Republican party any way you want but at this point in our history they are nothing but a criminal cartel that will lead us into more holy wars.

John McCain may have had courage in Vietnam many years ago, but his courage is gone, as he can no longer even stand up to his own party. It is Senator Obama who has shown courage over the last 18 months (both in his speech about race and as a black man putting his life on the line everyday to spread a message of unity when it is clear that many want to stay divided in fear)

I do not beleive Senator Obama can solve all of our problems. It will take generations to come to get us out of this mess, but I bleive in Senator Obama's message.

John McCain's message: more divide, more hate, more lies, more fear, more wars being fought in the name of religion and oil, more coroprate control, more intertwining of church and state, more criminal behavior.

Senator Obama's message: unity, hope, economic recovery, an end to the Iraq war, individual responsibility, government working with its citizens.

Four years ago Americans voted for a man that they liked with a message of hate and look at where that's gotten us.

And by the way as a Christian I do not want my government anywhere near my religion. It's time for real Christians to stand up against the extremists in their religion. They are no different than the Muslim extremists.

One glance at Sarah Palin and you see a woman with emotional problems and abnormal acting-out. Hillary (or anyone in the national spotlight) was not exactly normal but seemed to be keeping afloat on shared aspirations and challenges. A person who uses their office to fire their former brother-in-law, who fires the town librarian for failure to ban books, who is a trophy hunting advocate who shoots wolves from a helicopter or snowmobile, who denies human activity is causing climate change, who wants to narrow the reproductive rights of other women who do not share her fringe beliefs is now in line to replace our present criminal and perverted leaders. McCain may not realize it but serving 5 years in the Hanoi Hilton does not entitle him to ruin the lives of 300 million fellow citizens. Let's just hope the wax wings of this Maverick Icarus soon melt, plunging himself and his chosen Medusa to their oblivion. It will take more than a lobbyist's fixer and a sportscaster to save our country now.

"NO RELIGION, NO HOLY WARS"
Mark Twain

Church and State shall remain separate
The Constitution

Can you imagine if everyone kept their beliefs to themselves? Then man wouldn't kill each other over what they think. And they call it "Intelligent" design... NOT!

I'd like to know if Bill Moyers on his program has addressed or will address the issue of the RNC's showing of their 9/11 "Tribute" video and the media's handling of it.

Instead of being a respectful tribute, the video was not only a serious lie linking Iran and 9/11, it was blatant and cruel exploitation for political gain.

I would like to know more about how this was handled by the media and Bill's opinion of it. His ground-breaking program a few years ago on the media and the Bush Iraq campaign offers him the expertise to review fairly this issue.

Can you say “Megalomania?”
In an essay entitled Zoology, Magic, and Surrealism in the War on Terror, Michael Taussig writes:
“Yet would it were that simple because the power of the art of deceit does not- I repeat not- necessarily weaken with exposure. Sometimes the very opposite occurs; sometimes deceit seems to thrive on exposure, as in the conjuring tricks of shamanism and in the conjuring now exercised on a global scale by the world’s only superpower. This global conjuring rests on a sea change in the way truth and language work in what Carl Schmitt called “the exception,” meaning the state of emergency. The curious thing is that despite the tremendous concentration of power such a state of emergency implies, which would allow the leaders to tell the truth without fear of the consequences, the opposite is more likely to occur.”
When one looks into the bio of the current GOP candidate for president, one finds it to be the veritable epitome of exception; likewise the VP choice. Indeed, among the 50 United States, the state from which the VP nominee hails is quite exceptional in that each of its residents receive a yearly monetary remuneration. These are principled and committed folks who understand the operational intricacies of exception.
In the 1980’s General Wojciech Jaruzelski declared a state of war to save Poland (from itself). Who can forget the video image of this patriot shaking uncontrollably during the pope’s official state visit? John McCain would not hesitate to do what Jaruzelski did (in order to save America from itself). After all, as has been pointed out repeatedly, the war on terror is a war on the public, for that is where the enemy is found and operates.

Brian O'Neill :
Conservatives aka '' Christians'' DO NOT OWN GOD.

The modern legal concept of religious freedom as the union of freedom of belief and freedom of worship with the absence of any state-sponsored religion, originated in the United States of America.

This issue was addressed by Thomas Paine in his pamphlet, Common Sense (1776):

"As to religion, I hold it to be the indispensable duty of all government, to protect all conscientious professors thereof, and I know of no other business which government hath to do therewith…
The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, written in 1779 by Thomas Jefferson, proclaimed:

" No man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer, on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities."

I'm so sick of the religious right ''Conservatives'' twisting religion around to suit their needs.

I watched both DNC and GOP conventions on PBS and quite frankly found the GOP convention uninspiring at this country's time of need.

I guess if you like Cindy McCain's description of Sarah Palin as '' a reform-minded, hockey- momming, basketball-shooting, moose-hunting, salmon-fishing, pistol- packing mother of five for vice president'' then your a conservative Christian right wing nut all the way

THE AMERICANS I KNOW HAVE NO DIFFICULTY WITH HEARING THE NAME OF GOD. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF CHRISTIAN GROUPS IN THIS COUNTRY FROM CATHOLIC TO METHODIST TO PRESBYTERIAN AND ON AND ON, AS WELL AS NON CHRISTIAN RELIGIONS, INCLUDING THOSE JEWS WHO DO NOT BELIEVE JESUS WAS GOD'S SON.
THE PROBLEM IS NOT GOD. IT IS THE ULTRA CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIAN RIGHT WHO HAS DECIDED THAT ONLY THEIR GOD WILL REPRESENT THE POLITICAL POLICY OF THIS NATION. I AM A CHRISTIAN BUT I AM FED UP WITH THE FACT THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY BEING (THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT BORN AGAIN EVANGELICALS)HEARD IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE IN THIS COUNTRY AS FAR AS THE PERFECT PURVEYOR OF PUBLIC POLICY. THE INQUISITION THOUGHT IT WAS RIGHT TOO AND HAD NO PROBLEM INFLICTING DEATH BY ALL MEANS IMAGINABLE TO PROVE IT. GOD CALLED THE CLERGY TO MINISTER TO THE PEOPLE AND THE PEOPLE THEN FORM THEIR ETHICAL PRACTICES FROM GODLY INSTRUCTION. THEY HAVE BECOME THE PHARACIES OF OLD,THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE RIGHT ABOUT THE LAW TOO. JESUS HOWEVER TOLD THEM DIFFERENTLY.

Address my concerns?
Is that a joke? The war mongering and police brutality only increased my concerns.

When will the TRUTH about 9/11 be revealed?

When will we dismantle the Federal Reserve?

When will we repeal the Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, etc?

How many years will Bush and Cheney spend behind bars?

How much electoral fraud will there be this year?

How many more innocent people have to be murdered in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere?

When will we END the war on drugs?

When will we end the war of terror?

Brian O'neill, are you serious? Are you so ignorant you don't realize both parties are the same? Do you not realize the war on terror is a fraud? Do you not see the police state being built around you? Do you not realize the real terrorists are in Washington DC? Do you not realize that aside from Ron Paul, the Republican party does not stand for conservative values, and certainly not Christian values?

What issues are on top of your agenda?
The speakers speak of, “YOU WANT CHANGE”! The speaker speak of “FREEDOM”; In fact, there is no “CIVIC FREEDOM”! FREDOM is, “participating in POWER”! Speaker spoke of “the BRIDGE to NOWHERE”, where she contradicted herself by stating, “THANKS, BUT NO THANKS”! “She accepted the money (millions of dollars) from federal government. Made it sound like she turned the money back”.
“THE BRIDGE to NOWHERE” - a prepaid ticket of $500 millions, for Palin to go to Washington!
Speaker speak of “religious Moslem's radicals” as “evil”! Speak of gay marriages, abortion, family value etc. A “PARTY of MONEY” that “adhere to biblical notion of condemn the sin...” will not talk “about sex that mask debates about abortion”, saying, “Well, this is a family and this happens”, “If it’s a private decision for the Palin family, it’s a private decision for any family”. “An arena full of people who — officially, ... — oppose the very situation they’re in”. The speakers ignored the real social issues in life!
A “PARTY of MONEY” provided the Americans' with a HEALTH SYSTEM where the “Doctor, the one... will no longer see Medicare patients, and will not see Insurance patients starting in 2009”.
Speaker speak of, “Victory in Iraq is finally in sight”! Is it a victory with over 4100 death, thousands wounded.... etc.?
Ignoring the facts of falls pretenses, breach of duties and responsibilities and plunge the country into a WAR! Is this a “religious Christian's radical” of evil, with “over 4100 death, thousands wounded.... “ etc?
The “MONEY PARTY” stated, “THIS IS FOR YOU”! “YOU WANT CHANGE” - but denied the people the fundamental right to “EXPRESS THEIR WILL ON ALL ISSUES”! Denied the “FREEDOM to participate in POWER”!
Yes indeed, I want “CHANGE” and IF IT IS FOR US (ME), SET UP A
“CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION”

I watched both conventions from start to finish, and in all honesty the Republicans had next-to-nothing to say about the issues which concern me and my family the most: health care, education, jobs, the housing crisis, endless war in the Middle East(and now possibly in Eastern Europe). The Republican attack dogs were let loose on Senator Obama; how does vile partisanship like that help my family?

Gosh, Ben Neiesen, maybe I should be just like you. "A FOOL", oh wait, I was. I voted in 06 just for Democrats, thinking they were going fight for me. But Nope, Impeachment off the Table, Democrats writing Books about themselves, Filling their Coffers,Not doing a damn thing in Congress!
What are you smoking Ben, I need some of it, How's it feel to be NUMB!

Sounds like Brian O'neill is not only a Republican but a nerve was struck. Guess he didn't get his answers from the RNC either, just like 80% of other Americans.

Gee, what a shocker, PBS and the left didnt like the RNC convention! What a shock, OH MY GOD, Oh wait can't say God because Ole Bill Moyers doesn't like anyone who believes in GOD, especially Evan Christian! Christians are BAD, please tell us more ole great one, while you take corprate money from insurance companies(Omaha) that take monies from hard working people and screw them when they need it most! Please Bill tell us your great Wisdom, like your not biased or anything?
