Manfred Loeb, a German Jew from Cologne, came to this country to escape Hitler. He apprenticed at Zouderer's Bakery in Bridgeport, where he learned how to make his sweet six-braided Russian challah. Mr. Loeb eventually opened his own very successful bakery in Silver Spring, Maryland. His entire clientele - whether of German, Moroccan, or Russian background - enjoyed the Russian-style six-braided challah. Today Mr. Loeb is retired and for fun makes challah for his friends in a bakery set up in his own basement.
