One of the most successful high-quality chocolate companies today is Cocolat, founded by Alice Medrich in Berkeley, California, in an area known as the "gourmet ghetto" (Alice Waters's Chez Panisse is nearby). Born to a Jewish family in Temple City, California, Ms. Medrich received her culinary inspiration from her grandmother, who lived with her. "Sure we had bagels and lox and my mother might doctor up borscht from a jar," she said. "But my parents didn't connect to their heritage or cuisine. I remember it all from my grandmother who made a wonderful chicken soup."
