The most powerful earthquake in 40 years struck deep beneath the Indian Ocean near the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Dec. 26, 2004, triggering tsunamis that devastated villages and resorts in 11 countries, killing tens of thousands. The disaster launched the largest humanitarian relief effort in recent history.
