How We Live is is an ongoing look at how life is lived in America today. The series explores debates about city planning and development, and covers new ideas affecting how we live and work.

In this installment, Ray Suarez visits Burlington, Vermont, a town of 39,000 which has been rated one of the most livable areas in the United States.

Despite this, the disparity between wages and rising property prices means many middle income residents — people who keep the town running — cannot afford to live there. Can anything be done to stop this troubling trend?
