For the past decade, the small dissident Russian republic of Chechnya has been fighting a bloody battle for independence. Chechnya's quest for autonomy has sparked two wars between rebel fighters and federal Russian forces, testing Russia's tenuous hold on the mountainous republic. The war has cost tens of thousands of Chechen and Russian lives and has reduced much of the region, especially Chechnya's capital, Grozny, to ruins.

Chechen Rebel Leader Basayev Killed in Blast
Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, Russia's most notorious and wanted man, was killed Monday when a truck filled with dynamite exploded near his convoy.

Basayev's death comes days before the G8 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, during which Basayev allegedly was planning an attack in the southern part of the country.

Chechen Militant Accused in Beslan Siege Gets Life in Prison
A Russian judge sentenced the only known surviving hostage-taker of the 2004 Beslan school siege to life in prison Friday, prompting an angry outburst from mothers of some of the victims who stormed the glass and metal cage where the Chechen militant stood throughout the trial.

Chechen Rebels Clash with Russian Security Forces
Russian security forces worked Friday to root out the last of Chechen insurgents who launched a coordinated attack the previous day on the southern Russian city of Nalchik. The clashes reportedly left at least 108 dead.

Chechen Rebel Death Seen as Boost to Putin
Chechen rebel leader and former Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov was killed during a "special operation," Russian military officials announced Tuesday. Journalist and author Yo'av Karny talks about the impact Maskhadov's death will have in the struggle between Chechen rebels and the Kremlin.
