Brazil's
HIV Treatment Efforts
Susan Dentzer talks to patients and policy-makers about Brazil's
HIV treatment programs. UNAIDS has lauded these programs, saying
that Brazil is "continuing to show the way" as Latin
America struggles to treat those infected with HIV.
Preventing
New Infections
In the mid-nineties, the World Bank estimated 1.2 million Brazilians
would be infected with HIV by the year 2000. Today, the number
of those estimated to be infected with the virus is half that
amount. Susan Dentzer looks at the government-sponsored prevention
efforts that Brazilian officials say helped people protect themselves
from the virus.
Frank
ads that encourage Brazilians to use condoms and clean needles are key components
of the government's efforts to prevent new HIV infections. Brazil also distributes
free condoms and runs needle exchanges to help its citizens avoid putting themselves
at risk of contracting the virus.
