| Since the official end of Congo's 1998-2003 war, lingering fighting in the East, poverty and disease have resulted in the deaths of 45,000 Congolese per month, according to a survey published in January 2008 by the International Rescue Committee in New York and the Burnet Institute in Melbourne, Australia. |
