In the spring of 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandan Tutsis and Hutu political moderates were slaughtered by Hutu extremists, leaving physical and mental scars across the country. Photojournalist Kathryn Cook traveled to Rwanda in the winter of 2008 to document how the country is dealing with the genocide's fallout.

| Souvenir Uwimana, 18, holds a tattered bible in her home in Kinyinya village. She lives with her two younger sisters, ages 14 and 15. Born in Giseyni, which is located near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Souvenir lost both of her parents in the genocide. |
