Despite the Taliban's campaign of violence targeting the elections, Afghanistan held its second-ever presidential vote on Aug. 20. After the polls closed, election workers began counting millions of ballots. Alex Thier of the U.S. Institute of Peace describes the significance of the elections and the president's role.
