The challenges facing newly elected presidents during their transitions were reflected in editorial cartoons throughout the 20th century, capturing a glimpse of what was on the minds of Americans at these junctures in history.

| Theodore Roosevelt leaves the White House at the end of his two terms, with his chosen successor, William H. Taft left as the caretaker of his baby "policies." A porter carries Roosevelt's "big stick" in the background. Roosevelt selected Taft and gave him vital support during the 1908 campaign. |
