European Union: Key Moments

The European Union began in the 1950s with six member states following World War II, with the notion that nations whose economies were tied together wouldn't turn on each other. French foreign minister Robert Schuman (pictured on the right), who was integral in the formation of the EU, attends a conference in Italy, where people wave signs in support of a unified Europe.
